Volunteer roles at Hillfield Animal Home require just a small time commitment and the help you can provide will assist us in all of the work we do, so that we can continue to give assistance to animals in need.

Application Process

Step 1: Look through the roles below and choose one that you think is suitable.
Step 2: Click on the link to download an application form, print it off, and fill out all of the appropriate sections.
Step 3: Return completed application form (minus the welcome letter) to Hillfield Animal Home either in person, by email or by post.
Step 4: Complete the health and safety training on the Griffiths & Armour website, as stated on the welcome letter.
Step 5: Wait to hear from the animal home Manager or one of his team.


Current Volunteer Vacancies

Branch Committee Member/Trustee

As a trustee of the Burton-on-Trent & District Branch, you will be responsible (with your fellow committee members) for managing the affairs of the branch to promote and provide animal welfare within the Burton-on-Trent & District area.

Home Visitor

Home Visitors are an essential part of the re-homing process. The role involves going to prospective adopter's homes and checking their suitability for an RSPCA animal, and re-visit a few weeks later to see how the animal is getting on in its new home. In order to fulfil this role, you will need your own transport.
We require home visitors in the following areas:

Foster Carer

Fostering involves temporarily looking after animals from the animal home. This could be for a variety of reasons including animals recovering from a medical procedure, pregnant or nursing mothers, or simply the fact that we don't have room at the animal home at the time. We are currently looking for foster carers for Dogs, Cats and Small Furries.

Fund-raising and Events Assistants

This role is vital to keeping Hillfield Animal Home running. You will be working as part of a well functioning team to help organise and run events throughout the year from simple car boot sales to helping out on Open Day, our biggest event of the year!
This role can involve duties such as:
Baking Cakes
Moving Tables
Setting Up Gazebos
Setting up and Manning Stalls
Assisting Members of the Public
Putting Up Posters in the Local Area
Plus Much More...!


Animal Home Based

Dog Walker

Dog walking at the animal home involves giving the dogs some well needed time out of their kennels. We like the minimum walking time to be half an hour to help the dogs de-stress and burn off a lot of their built up energy! So if you can spare a few hours a week, please feel free to apply!
When applying, please specify if you would like to come AM, PM or both, and the days you're available.

Cat Socialiser

This role involves giving some of the cats at the animal home some time out of their pod to have a bit of a play and have some human interaction. With more experienced volunteers, we will get out some of the nervous cats that we may have at the animal home to try and bring them round and gain some confidence.
MORNINGS - We require Cat Socialisers on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Kennel Assistant

This position will involve working in the kennel block, assisting the staff with the day to day tasks. Main duties include cleaning out the kennels, washing dog bowls, socialising dogs in the compound, and anything else that the staff may need help with.

Cattery Assistant

- Application Form

This position will involve assisting the cattery staff in their day to day duties. Primary duties will be cleaning out the cat runs in one of the two catteries, washing litter trays, and any other duties as directed by animal home staff.

Small Animal Unit Assistant

- Application Form

This position will involve helping the staff in the Small Animal Unit in their day to day duties. Duties will include feeding and cleaning out rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and birds, sweeping pathways, and any other tasks as directed by Staff.
We currently require Small Animal Assistants for every day, Monday - Sunday.

Grounds Person / Maintenance

This role will be to maintain the site. Duties will involve weeding, sweeping, odd jobs and any other duties as directed by animal home staff. There is a possibility of this role also involving driving the van as and when needed, however for insurance purposes drivers must be over 25. (Applicants under 25 will still be considered, however wont be able to drive the van.)



Charity Shop Volunteer

- If you are interested, please feel free to pop into the shop or call on 01283 777117.

If you can spare one morning or afternoon a week on a regular basis to help serve and to sort our donations at the shop in Swadlincote, you will be made most welcome. This shop is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
